“Portrait of Kali Fajardo-Anstine”

We are heavily inspired by the author and Colorado native, Kali Fajardo-Anstine. It was after reading her first book, “Sabrina & Corina”, that I experienced a feeling that I had never experienced before — complete representation. Kali's book is made up of 11 short stories set in Colorado. Each story is about different Latina and indigenous women throughout generations and takes place all over the state. In the story, "Sugar Babies," a young woman living in the San Luis Valley processes her mother's absence. In "Sisters,” set in the 1950s, a woman living in the Northside of Denver struggles with her sexuality.

The women in my (Kaitlin) family are an invisible population of this state. I would like us and the women like them to see themselves on this wall. We would love to paint a stylized portrait of Kali with an abstract colorful background. She would be a great focal point for the mural because she embodies Latina strength, achievement & visibility.
